Condition

The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is secure with some areas of abrasion. Some frame abrasion has occured. Inspection under UV light reveals an area of restoration along the lower edge and strengthenings and retouchings to the sitters' faces. Offered in a wooden frame with some minor knocks.

The composition is based on a Carracci design known through an engraving by G. Lazzarini and a painting in a private collection, Piacenza, the latter formerly attributed to Annibale (see P.J. Cooney & G. Malafarina, L'opera completa di Annibale Carracci, Milan 1976, p. 130, no. 205, reproduced, under 'attributed works').
