Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The soft wood panel is in good condition, there is a knot lower left which has caused some minor eruptions to the paint layer but otherwise the paint surface is in a secure condition. There have been past losses along the bottom edge, to the tulips, upper left and right, to a horizontal scratch, through the sitter's right sleeve , to a small loss upper left, restored, and to one or two places on the sitter's face and neck. There is a filigree of pale cracks visible in the darker passages. Otherwise the painting is in a good condition and the removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality.
Antique gold part-painted frame, some chips."

Catalogue Note
According to legend Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, discovered the cross on which Christ was crucified in the Holy Land. She is usually depicted, as here, in regal attire holding the cross and three nails.
