Relined. there are numerous old, crudely filled losses (as are visible in catalogue image) and two old repaired punctures: one in the background between the heads of the two figures and another on the red drapery on saint's forearm at center. scattered areas of thinness are noticeable and the areas of brown pigment have sunken and have lost some definition. however, here are still good passages of paint, as in the flesh tones. ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouches as mentioned above. this painting will take some work, but with the readdressing of the old crude fills and sensitive restoration, this painting should improve and be an impressive image.
