The sitter has traditionally been thought to be the poet and dramatist Philippe Quinault (1635-1688).

Another version of this composition sold Monaco, Christie's, June 19, 1988, lot 61, as by Largillièrre and dated by Georges de Lastic to circa 1700-5. The sitter in that portrait had been traditionally identified as Jean de la Bruyère (1645-1696).
