Condition
The colour in the illustration is too pale. This small 15th-century panel presents old inactive worm holes on the reverse. The panel has otherwise aged well. There is a small hole present above the Madonna's left breast and there are some losses along the lower edge of the panel, as visible in the catalogue. Some of the gold has flaked off but otherwise the paint surface is in fair condition. Some of the punchwork remains, although in other areas it has abraded. Inspection under UV light reveals retouchings, for example, along the lower centre below Christ, to the Madonna's face and Magdalene's hair. Other areas clearly appear to have been retouched but the varnish impedes satisfactory reading, for example in the area around Chrsit at the top of the panel. Overall for a panel of its age the work has retained its poignancy and charm.
