The catalogue illustration of this unframed 16th-century panel is representative. The support consists of 4 vertical panels secured by three horizontal battens. The panel on the extreme left has a vertical crack running 15 cms from the upper edge. As can be made out in the photograph, the panel joins are visible to the recto of the panel. The paint surface is secure and under a yellowed varnish. Three areas of cleaning tests can be seen to the naked eye (see catalogue illustration: to the jug lower left, to the Madonna's forehead and to Joseph's ear). Inspection under ultraviolet light is inconclusive but does reveal a further cleaning test to the spire upper left.
