Description

Condition

The canvases have been relined. Both paint surfaces are a little abraded with some cracquelure and old discoloured retouchings are visible in both paintings. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouchings and some more recent strengthenings. Offered in wood and plaster frames with some knocks.

Catalogue Note

The present works are later, probably nineteenth-century copies, after Canaletto's originals. The former is part of Her Majesty the Queen's Collection, Windsor, while the second can be found in Rome, Albertini Collection, (see A. Corboz, Canaletto, vol. II, Milan 1985, p. 589, cat. no. P 88, and p. 637, cat. no. P 251, both reproduced).
