Catalogue Note

The composition derives from the portrait of Macchiavelli by Santi di Tito (1536-1603) in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence (see A. Venturi, Storia dell'Arte Italiana, vol. IX, part VII, Liechtenstein 1967, p. 591, cat. no. 322, reproduced).

One of the great early modern analyzers of political power, Niccolò Machiavelli is renowned for his work The Prince, which proposed the revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena.
