Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is cradled and in a good stable condition and the paint is flat . There is a small horizontal split to the central left of the panel and some unnecessary strengthening of natural thinnesses to the foreground. The darker pigments e.g. figures' hats and the horses, have been abraded and strengthened and there are some minor restorations to the top edge, upper left. Overall the painting is in a good preserved condition. A slight tonal improvement would be achieved with the removal of the varnish. Offered in a gilt wood frame with some damages."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The composition follows that of Cuyp's original, dated by Reiss to the early 1650s, in the Duke of Bedford's collection, Woburn Abbey (see S. Reiss, Aelbert Cuyp, London 1975, p. 160, cat. no. 120, reproduced).
