Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but raised with prominent stretcher marks. The naturally thin, and therefore, vulnerable paint layer has been abraded in the past leading to areas that have needed extensive augmentation; these include the back and foregrounds and the darker passages. However, the canvas texture and the pale ground colour is still visible. The painted highlights are generally well preserved and the still life to the table, the pale costumes and the faces are in good condition. A slight tonal enhancement would be achieved with the removal of the varnish. Offered in an ornate gilt wood frame with some minor chips."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
