  • The mystic marriage of Saint Catherine
  • oil on canvas

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint is stable. The canvas is coarse in texture which has led to abrasion, 'topping', to certain areas and these have been strengthened. A filigree of pale shrinkage cracks in the background have been reduced and under ultraviolet light a scattering of retouchings can be seen across the surface, including the Christ child's flesh and the white mantle above. Many areas are in a good untouched condition. The varnish is discoloured and the tonality would be improved if it were removed. Offered in a modern black and gold frame with some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
