Description

  • Taddeo di Bartolo
  • saint barbara
  • inscribed along the lower edge of the frame: SANCTA . BARBARA.
  • oil on panel, gold ground, shaped top, in a tabernacle frame

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The poplar panel has had worm damage and has been consolidated on the reverse, leaving an inherent fragility. There is a consolidated and restored split to the left side and minor losses to the gold ground can be detected. There is a scattering of minor restored paint losses to the red robe, the flesh tones (revealing the ground colour) through the tower and the edging of the robe. Removing the varnish would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a gold ground in a tabernacle frame with some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Mr. Everett Fahy for identifying this work as a product of Taddeo di Bartolo's workshop and for suggesting that assistance in its execution from Taddeo himself should not be ruled out.
