"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable. There are minor restored paint losses to the background and further extensive augmentation here too where thinness to the paint surface has occurred. Highlights to the hair have been added along with strengthened shadows, but some of this is excessive and extraneous. Facial hair and shadows have been augmented. The flesh tones, armour, tunic and sash are well preserved, the paint remaining in a good condition. The varnish is discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality. Offered in an ornate gilt wood frame in good condition."
