Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined, the paint surface is raised but stable. The thin paint to the feigned oval is worn as is some of the hair and the black tunic; there is augmentation to be seen here. The flesh tones, the collar and the curtain are well preserved. The varnish is very degraded and discoloured and its removal would significantly improve the tonality. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with some loss."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

This lot is accompanied by the certificates of Dr. Tancred Borenius (dated London 1941) and Dr. Gustave Gluck (dated Brussels 12 October 1937), attributing the painting to Sir Anthony Van Dyck. The sitter has traditionally been identified as Philip Rubens, brother to the artist.
