Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. The paint layer is raised and stable but there is evident previous pin prick loss throughout, much of this is restored. The tacking edge on three sides has been made out and restored as have tears to Christ's left arm and horizontally in to Mary and one through the angel with the garland of flowers. There are two restored damages to the left of Christ's right leg. Mary's blue robe is abraded and paint loss can be detected. Under ultraviolet light the restored pin prick losses and tears are visible as are the minor losses concentrated to the darker passages. Many of the finer details are retained and much of the textured brushstrokes remain. Removing the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
