Good overall condition. Panel is composed of one non parquet and stable piece. Under a very dirty and uniform varnish. There is a 0,5 cm high primer layer left unpainted all around the painting . Under ultraviolet light: Some small retouches are visible in the rocks on the left and to fill in some cracks in the upper left corner and in the sky, on the right.

Le tableau que nous présentons illustre le Pont du Gard, aqueduc romain construit par Agrippa en 19 avant J.C. pour alimenter la ville de Nîmes en eau potable. La beauté de ce site, vestige d'un passé glorieux, inspira tant Hubert Robert qu'il en fit un sujet privilégié comme en témoigne une autre composition de l'artiste, à plus grande échelle, réalisée en 1787 pour le décor du château de Fontainebleau et aujourd'hui conservée au musée du Louvre.

Hubert Robert nous décrit ici le Pont du Gard emprunt d'une certaine poésie quelque peu éloignée de la réalité. On retrouve tout le caractère pittoresque et fantastique des veduta, mettant en valeur une construction née des mains de l'homme et parvenant à s'imposer dans un décor naturel puissant. L'artiste a su jouer des contrastes lumineux pour orienter le regard du spectateur vers ce pont littéralement enveloppé dans une douce lueur rosée.
