Condition

The catalogue illustration is lighter compared to reality. Respectable overall condition. The canvas has been relined. Several scattered restored paint losses, visible to the naked eye and in the catalogue (darker areas). Under ultraviolet light: Under a dirty varnish. Restored paint losses, especially in the farmer right hand and in the lower right corner close to the child feet. Some retouches around and in the farmer face.

Catalogue Note

D'origine danoise, Bernhardt Keil partit en 1647 pour Amsterdam afin d'y intégrer l'atelier de Rembrandt. Il y passa huit ans et fit ensuite le voyage à Rome en 1656 où il fut amené à travailler pour divers églises. Parallèlement à son activitié dans la grande décoration, Keil développa peu à peu un intérêt plus prononcé pour les scènes de genre illustrant le caractère authentique de la vie paysanne dont notre tableau est un bel exemple.
