Description

  • Bartholomeus Molenaer
  • A school room interior with children reading and playing, a teacher seated behind a desk on the right
  • indistinctly signed with initials lower right: B M .
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Da Costa;
Thomas Bryan;
The New York Historical Society, New York, by 1915 (as by I. van Ostade, inv. no. B146);
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 1 November 1972, lot 32 (as by P. de Bloot).

Condition

The actual painting is warmer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 planks, joined horizontally, and is bevelled on all sides. The join is somewhat crudely retouched. No damages are apparent. The paint surface is secure, although a little abraded in the background, and background figures. Some retouchings and minor strengthening in the foreground figures are visible to the naked eye, but further inspection under Ultra-Violet light is impeded by the old and dirty varnish layer. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
