Description
- Hendrick Bogaert
- Peasants dancing and drinking outside an inn, a church tower beyond
signed lower right: ·HB(in ligature) ogert·fesÿt·
- oil on panel
Provenance
In the family of the present owners since the 1960s.
Condition
The actual painting is warmer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel consists of 2 planks, joined horizontally, and is bevelled on all sides. The join has been reinforced with 7 small battons. A horzontal crack of approx. 10 cm., running from the right edge, but which is not visible to the front, has been reinforced with 3 smaller battons. Otherwise, no damages seem to be apparent. Small spots of retouching can be observed in the sky, in the left foreground and in the dancing figures. Strengthening can be observed in the other figures seated.
The paint surface is covered with a glossy and slightly dirty layer of varnish.
Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals extensive additional tiny retouchings throughout, in particular in the sky, in the treetrunk lower left, and in the farmhouse.
Offered in a black wood frame with a gilt fillet, with chips in the lower left corner. (MW)
