Description

  • Sybrand van Beest
  • David refusing weapons for his fight with Goliath (I Sam. 17:31-45)
  • signed and dated lower right: SVB(in ligature) eest/ 1640
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is a little darker and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two horizontal planks. The join has been reinforced with 7 battons on the reverse, and is visible to the front. The brushwork in the main figures is wonderfully preserved. A few small spots of paint loss are visible in the upper left and lower right corners, along the join to the right and to the left, and there's a tendency towards flaking in the upper right. Two thin horizontal splits, each of approx. 1.5 cm. are running from the right edge above the join, and in the upper right corner. Minor strengthening can be observed in the red drapery, in the figure most right, and in the armour in the foreground. The paint surface is covered with a very dirty and dull layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is inconclusive due to the varnish. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with elaborate plaster decorations along all edges, with a few chips. (MW)
