Description

  • Abraham Danielsz. Hondius
  • Three hounds chasing a nesting wild goose in a hilly landscape
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Dr. Haseloff, Berlin;
Anonymous sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 23 May 1963, lot 53.

Literature

G. Parthey, Deutscher Bildersaal. Verzeichnis der in Deutschland vorhanden Ölbilder verstorbener Maler aller Schulen, Berlin 1863;
Max Schasler, Berlins Kunstschätze, Berlin 1856, p. 375, no. 96.

Condition

The actual painting is less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable, and bevelled on all sides. There's a thin retouched horizontal split of approx. 4 cm. running from the right edge. The paint surface seems to be in good condition. A few small retouched paint losses are visible in the upper centre, and some retouchings can be observed in the rocks on the left, in the foliage lower right and in the dog on the left. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid and reveals additional tiny retouchings in the wings of the goose, and minor strengthening in the dogs. Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood and plaster frame, in good condition. (MW)
