Description

  • Adriaen de Gryef
  • A wooded landscape with huntsmen and their hounds on the banks of a lake, an abundance of dead game in the foreground
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Mrs. Cecil Raikes;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 29 June 1962, lot 67 (as by Jan Weenix).

Condition

The catalogue illustration is a little too yellow, but otherwise representative for the actual painting. The canvas has a slightly stiff relining, which has flattened the paint surface a little but. The paint layer is fairly abraded, mainly in the greenish tones in the background, but the animals and dead game have been well-preserved. Some scattered retouchings are visible along the edges, in the foliage and trees in the background, in the horseman and coat of the figure in the foreground. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid, and reveals more extensive retouchings throughout, but not in the hunting still life. Offered in a decorative carved wood and plaster gilt frame, with a few losses. (MW)
