Provenance
Anonymous sale , London, Sotheby's, 10 July 1980, lot 189 (according to a label on the reverse).
Condition
The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting.
The single panel is flat and stable, and bevelled on all sides. No damages seem to be apparent. The impasto and texture of the paint layer is wonderfully preserved, especially in the dog and flowers. There's a fine craquelure pattern which is slightly starting to lift in places, mainly in the upper left corner. Retouchings and minor strengthening can be observed in the sky upper left, in the foliage in the bouquet, and lower right, and in the dead birds in the lower foreground. The paint surface is under a thick and dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is largely impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but does confirm the aforesaid.
Offered in a plain wood frame with gilt fillets, with a few losses. (MW)
