Description

  • Isaac van Oosten
  • Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden; The Expulsion from Paradise
  • a pair, both signed lower left, the former: I. v. oosten fe.; the latter: . J. v. oosten.f
  • both oil on panel

Condition

The actual paintings are slightly softer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both panels consist of one plank, and are lightly bevelled on all sides. The panels are slightly warped. Both paintings are covered with a transparent layer of varnish. The Garden of Eden: there are a few tiny paint losses to the centre right and along the lower edge, and there's a slight tendency towards flaking. A few tiny retouchings can be observed in the sky, in the foliage upper left, along the lower edge, and in the bear in the foreground. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light, furthermore, reveals additional tiny ones in the sky, in the boar and deer in the foreground, in the water lower right, and it reveals a thin restored horizontal split of approx. 3 cm. running just below the elephants on the right. The Expulsion: there is a small spot of paint loss to the lower right, and a slight tendency towards flaking. Tiny scattered retouchings can be observed in the sky, in the grass lower centre, and in the lions and cows in the foreground. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light reveals additional tiny ones in the foliage, in the water lower left, and in the figures. Offered in plain wood frames, in good condition. (MW)
