Description
- Christoffel Jacobsz. van der Laemen
- An elegant company seated around a set table on a terrace, a formal garden beyond
signed and dated lower centre: van de Lamen fecit 1642
- oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Berlin, Spik, 30 October 1970, lot 299.
Condition
The actual painting is less bright in its colours than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel consists of one plank with a newer panel attached to the reverse to reinforce the original panel.
It appears that the panel was split up at some point, the horizontal cracks still visible to the front. The paint surface has a tendency towards minor flaking throughout the middle of the panel. Scattered pinpoint paint losses are visible in the group of figures and to the centre left. Discoloured retouchings are visible in the blue dress and red cloth draped over the chair.
Inspection under UV-light confirms aforesaid and reveals additional extensive retouchings throughout, e.g. in the background, along the cracks, in the figures around the table and architecture to the left.
Offered in a painted layered frame with black strips, in good condition. (JD)
