Description

  • Pieter Neefs the Younger
  • A church interior of the cathedral of Antwerp with a procession in the foreground and beggars seated to the left
  • signed and dated centre right: peeter/ neeffs/ 1659
  • oil on copper

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 30 November 1983, lot 240.

Condition

The actual painting is a little darker and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The copper plate is a little wobbly, and reinforced to the reverse with wooden cradleing. A few pinpoint size paint losses are visible lower right and upper left, but otherwise, no damages are apparent. The paint surface is under a dull and dirty layer of varnish. The paint layer is secure and well-preserved. A few small retouchings can be observed in the upper right and upper left, in the pillars in the centre, and in the figures lower left, but further inspection under Ultra-Violet light is impeded by the dirty varnish layer. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame, with a few losses. (MW)
