Description
- Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen the Younger
- A still life with a garland of flowers surrounding a vase with two sculpted putti, on a stone ledge
- signed on the stone pedestal lower left: gasper.pedro.verbruggen f
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is slightly greener in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas is relined. Except for small paint losses along the edges (probably due to frame abrasion) and a small dent lower left, the paint surface is in good and stable condition.
A few discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the putti and in the stone ledge. The paint surface is under a coarse and dense craquelure pattern and the varnish layer is dirty and discoloured.
Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional retouchings in the background area, mainly along the right and left edges; a few spots in the top flowers as well as in the bodies of the putti and in the pink roses next to the left putto, and a few scattered spots in the stone ledge. Otherwise the flowers appear to be well preserved.
Offered in a gilt wood frame, in good condition. (JD)

Catalogue Note
Gaspar Peeter (Pedro) Verbruggen the Younger was baptised on 11 November 1664. After studying under his father, he became a master of the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp in 1677. From the early 1680s he taught several painters as Peter Frans Casteels (active 1690-98), Gillis Vinck the Younger (active 1697-98) and Jacob Melchior van Herck (active 1691-1735). In 1691 he became Dean of the Guild but moved to The Hague in Holland, following his bankruptcy in 1703. Here he worked closely with Mathieu Terwesten (1670-1757). Verbruggen died 14 March 1730 in his native Antwerp.
