Provenance
Van Eerden, Rotterdam (according to a note at the R.K.D., The Hague).
Condition
The actual painting is more brown reddish in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel is cradled and seems to consist of two horizontal planks, the join clearly visible to the front. The paint layer is somewhat abraded, especially in the sky and foliage. A small scratch is visible lower centre. Discoloured retouchings and strengthening are visible in the sky, the houses in the distance and in the figures to the foreground. Otherwise the painting layer is overall in good condition and under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals additional retouchings and strengthening of the figures in front of the church as well as the houses on either side. Retouching along the join becomes visible too.
Offered in a gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (JD)
