Description

  • Christian Georg Schüz
  • An extensive Rhenish landscape with shepherds and travellers resting on a path in the foreground, a view of a castle and a village beyond
  • signed and dated lower centre: Schüz. inventor./ et fec. 1761
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is less red and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and bevelled on all sides. No damages are apparent. Minor strengthening and retouching can be observed in the sky upper centre, in the mountain centre right, in the foliage on the left, and in the figures in the foreground. Otherwise, the paint layer is in excellent condition. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid, and reveals no further retouching. Offered in a later plain gilt wood frame in good condition. (MW)
