Description
- Pieter Meulener
- A cavalry battle scene in a hilly landscape
- bears signature and indistinct date lower left: FPalamedes Palamedes 16..
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is less red, a little less bright and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has an old relining (wax), and has possibly been cut. Two diagonal creases, each of approx. 20 cm. are visible in the upper left and upper right corners. A few tiny flecks of paint loss are visible along the left edge, and there's a small restored tear to the lower left, but otherwise, no damages are apparent. The paint surface is under a very dirty layer of varnish, and there's some surface dirt. The paint is slightly thin in places, but overall, the paint surface is in good condition. A few small retouchings can be observed in the figure most left, in the sky, and in some of the figures. Further inspection under Ultra-Violet light is impeded by the dirty varnish layer.
Offered in a plain parcel-gilt wood frame, with a few losses. (MW)
