Condition

Both paintings are warmer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. The canvas appears to be unlined. Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front. The paint surface is under a very dirty layer of varnish, and there's some surface dirt. There is a somewhat coarse craquelure, which is slightly beginning to lift in some areas. Otherwise, the paint surface is in very good condition. The brushwork and impasto, particularly in the highlights, has been nicely preserved. A few minor retouchings can be observed in the wall in the background, in the sky and in the figure's cloak, but inspection under Ultra-Violet light remains inconclusive due to the dirty varnish. Offered in a plain parcel-gilt polished wood frame, in good condition. The miniature portrait on a small sound panel, shows some minor strengthening and tiny retouchings in the face. The paint surface is under a dull and uneven layer of varnish. Overall, in good condition, and offered in a later plain gilt wood frame. (MW)
