Description

  • Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Younger
  • A garland of blue and white grapes, peaches, oranges, lemons and prunes, figs, corn and chestnuts, in a landscape near a classical column
  • indistinctly signed lower left: Joan P..lo Gillemans
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is darker and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old relining (glue), and has possibly been cut. Stretcher marks are slightly visible the front. The paint surface is under a glossy and dirty layer of varnish. The paint is somewhat thin in the darker greenish tones in the centre right, but otherwise is in fair condition. A few small retouchings can be observed in the grapes on the left, in the red drapery, in the foliage centre and upper right, and in the lower foreground. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is inconclusive due to the dirty varnish layer. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (MW)
