Description

  • Adam de Colonia
  • A wooded hilly landscape with shepherds resting with their herd, other figures preparing a meal above a fire to the right
  • indistinctly signed and dated lower left: A. C.lonia 1661
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 20 October 1972, lot 33.

Condition

The actual painting is darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel is cradled, not bevelled and consists of three planks, joined vertically. The paint surface is somewhat abraded throughout, and the pigment of the blue coat has deteriorated, but otherwise the paint surface is in stable condition. Discoloured retouchings are visible in the sky and along the joins. Strengthening and minor retouchings are visible in the goats in the background and black cow. The paint surface is under a transparent, but slightly yellowed varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light confirms the abovementioned retouchings throughout, e.g. in the two herdsmen, in the cows and in the distant landscape. Offered in a modern gilt wood frame, in good condition. (JD)
