  • signed centre right : HENRICVS/ VERSCHVRING.
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 21 March 1972, lot 128;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 20 October 1972, lot 17.

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone and the contrasts are less strong than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined. The paint surface has somewhat flattened and is thin, but in stable condition. Retouchings and strengthening are visible in the sky, in the donkey, in the main figures in the foreground as well as the objects lower right. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals extensive retouchings in the sky, in the top of the architecture; additional spots in the seated woman and the area around her. Offered in a gilt wood ornate frame, in good condition. (JD)
