Description

  • Claes Claesz. Wou
  • A Dutch threemaster and other shipping in choppy waters, a view of Fort Rammekens off the coast of Vlissingen in the background
  • signed lower left: C.C. WOV
  • oil on panel

Provenance

With M. Schulthess, Basel, by 1964;
With H. Schlichte Bergen, Amsterdam, June 1966;
H. van Maanen, The Hague, by 1973.

Exhibited

Delft, Antiekbeurs, June 1966 (exhibited with H. Schlichte Bergen).

Condition

The actual painting is less bright and deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two planks, joined horizontally, and is bevelled on all sides. The join has been reenforced with a horizontal strip of wood. The join has been retouched. The paint in the sea is slightly abraded, allowing the ground to show through. Minor strengthening can be observed in the ships. The paint surface is under a very dirty layer of varnish, and its removal would improve the tonality. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid, and reveals a few additional small retouchings in the sky, and minimal strengthening in the coastline on the left. Offered in a plain wood frame, in fair condition. (MW)
