Description
- Jacobus Storck
- A Dutch harbour scene with sailing vessels and other shipping near the coast, with numerous figures on the quayside, a view of a castle beyond
- signed lower centre right: IACOBVS. STVRK.
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is warmer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has a stable relining. No damages are visible to the naked eye. The paint surface seems to be in good condition. Stretcher marks are slightly visible along the upper edge. A few small retouchings can be observed in the sky upper centre and centre left, in the sea lower centre left, in the sailing boat on the right, and in the houses on the quay. The paint surface is under a very dirty and glossy layer of varnish.
Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals a few additional scattered retouchings in the central ship, in the sea and sky, and along the edges. Furthermore, a small vertical repaired tear of approx. 4 cm. is revealed in the centre right in the castle.
Offered in a plain gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (MW)
