Description

  • Jan Baptist Wolfaerts
  • A dune landscape with a peasant woman milking sheep outside a farmhouse, a water carrier and a shepherd with his cattle on a path, a view of the Saint Bavo church in Haarlem beyond
  • bears signature lower left: Potter
  • oil on panel

Provenance

A.C.C.M. Kymell, The Hague, by 1945;
Mr. Quast, The Hague, March 1947;
In the family of the present owners since 1968 (all the above as by Govert Camphuysen).

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone and less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 horizontal planks, and is very light bevelled on all sides. The panel is uncradled, and flat and stable. A few thin horizontal surface cracks are visible in the upper right corner. Otherwise, no damages are apparent, and the paint layer seems to be in good condition, although there's some thinnes in the sky and in the brownish hues in the lower foreground. Small retouchings can be observed along the join, in the sky centre left, in the farmhouse, in the milkmaid, and in the grass in the lower left foreground. The paint surface is under a thick and yellowed layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is largely impeded by th dirty varnish layer, but there's probably some strengthening of the figures underneath. Offered in a gilt wood frame with decorative moulded borders, in good condition. (MW)
