Description

  • Karel Breydel
  • A landscape with a cavalry skirmish and a village under attack
  • signed lower right: KB(in compendium)reydel
  • oil on copper

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 29 June 1962, lot 160;
Anonymous sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 11 June 1963, lot 19.

Exhibited

Wiesbaden, Museum Wiesbaden, 5 Sammler - 5 Meinungen, 8 April - 27 May 1973.

Condition

The actual painting is slightly softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The copper plate is flat and stable, and no damages are apparent. The paint is a little thin in some of the darker tones, e.g. in the horse and figures centre left, but otherwise, is very well-preserved. The paint surface is under an old and very dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but there's probably some strengthening of the figures underneath. Offered in a decorative carved wood and plaster gilt frame, in good condition. (MW)
