Description
- Jan Miense Molenaer
- A merry company outside an inn
- signed (strengthened) lower right: J. M. MOLENAER
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Berlin, Lepke, 14 March 1922, lot 129,
Where bought by the family of the present owners.
Condition
The actual painting is darker in tone and the colours are less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting is relined (wax). Due to the relining the paint surface has flattened and abrasion is visible throughout. Some discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye in some of the clouds.
Inspection under UV-light confirms above mentioned retouchings and reveals additional minor spots of retouching throughout and some strengthening of the figures, especially in the centre. No damages appear visible under UV-light and the signature seems to be strenghtened. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish layer. Offered in a later plain wood frame, in good condition.
