Description
- Matthieu van Plattenberg
- A shipwreck of two men-o' war in heavy storms near a rocky coast with a stronghold, shipwrecked figures in the foreground
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is greener and less bright in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining (glue). Particularly the brushwork in the highlights has been beautifully preserved. The paint surface has grown a bit thin in the foreground. The canvas has suffered from small damages as is visible in the upper left, along the right edge in the centre, in the sky in the centre, and in the lower left and right corners. Some retouchings can also be observed in the thinner areas. The paint surface is covered with a fine layer of dirt and a discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light is partially impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but does confirm the recent restorations as mentioned above, and reveals additional strengthening and small retouchings above. Offered in a decorative carved wood frame, with a few chips. (ML/MW)

Catalogue Note
Van Plattenberg, called Montagnia, specialised in stormy seascapes that are alike to the compositions by Pieter Mulier, called Tempesta. However, the former's work typically features seas that are even more turbulent. A comparable stormy marine is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.1
