Condition

The actual painting is somewhat deeper and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old relining (wax). Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front and also the canvas structure is visible. One small vertical crack of approx. 3 cm. is visible in the upper right corner, and there's a small retouched dent along the upper edge to the right. There is a light tendency towards cupping in the lower, darker areas. Otherwise, the paint surface seems to be in very good condition. The paint surface is under a fine layer of dirt and a discoloured layer of varnish, and has a fine craquelure pattern. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a few small retouchings in the sky and a few in the foreground along the edge. Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood frame, in good condition. (ML/MW)

Catalogue Note

This breezy seascape is typical of Bellevois, who apart from some shipwrecked views, predominately painted these light marinescapes. The damp atmosphere with the grand frigates shown at a three-quarter angle is characteristic for the artist, who took particular care over the decorative sterns of his ships. The way the sun is only shining down the centre part of the composition, is something we see in many of his seascapes, giving it a luminous effect.
