Literature

Condition

The actual painting is somewhat deeper in tone and less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a rather loose relining and stretcher marks are visible to the front. There are some large spots of paint loss along the right edge, in the upper right corner and in the lower right corner. Smaller paint losses are visible in the centre just above the lower edge, in the lower left corner, and along the left edge. The paint surface has grown slightly thin in places, e.g. in the cattle, in the trees upper left, in the woods lower right. A few discoloured retouchings can be observed along the lower edge. The paint surface is covered with a rather coarse craquelure pattern, which varies in places. The paint surface is under a yellowed layer of varnish and under a fine layer of surface dirt. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals additional tiny retouchings along the lower and left edges. Offered unframed. (MW)
