Description

  • Bartholomeus Molenaer
  • A barn interior with peasants conversing and playing ball
  • bears traces of a signature lower left: IvOf..

  • oil on panel, octagonal

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The single, octagonal shaped panel is flat and stable, and bevelled on all sides. A thin horizontal split of approx. 5 cm. is visible in the lower left corner. The paint surface has grown slightly thin in the background, but, otherwise, seems to be in good condition. Some small retouchings can be observed in the standing figure in the foreground, and in the background centre left. Minor strengthening is visible in the figures in the centre and in the background, and in the background upper centre. The paint surface is covered with a clear, recent layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals no further retouchings. Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood frame in good condition. (MW)
