Description
- Abraham sacrificing Isaac
- oil on panel, probably in its original frame
Condition
The actual painting is softer and less red in tone, and shows more detail in the darker tones than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and bevelled on all sides. The paint surface seems to be in good condition. A spot of paint loss of approx. 1 by 1.5 cm. is visible in the lower left corner. Two tiny paint losses are visible in the lower right corner. The paint surface has grown dry, resulting in a tendency towards cupping. Small retouchings can be observed in the lower right corner, and in the lower centre, in Abraham's foot. The paint surface is covered with a dirty layer of varnish. The craquelure pattern is dense and somewhat coarse. Inspection under ultra violet light is largely impeded by the varnish layer, but does confirm the retouchings as mentioned above. There is possibly some retouching in the background. Offered in a plain, possibly original, gilt wood frame with a few paint losses. (MW)
