  • Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk;
    bears old attribution in pen and ink: del Cambiaggio and numbering 6 and 32 

Condition

Unframed. Losses to the upper corners and the lower centre of the right edge. Also small losses throughout the sheet where the ink has corroded the paper, all repaired neatly. The paper is yellowed and somewhat foxed and the ink is rather sunk in places. But the drawing still makes a good impression.

Catalogue Note

Two further drawings of this composition are known.  Both are of lesser quality than the present example, but are testimony to the popularity of the composition.  One is in the Gallerie dell' Accademia, Venice (inv. no. 2577) and is in reverse to the present composition while the second, formerly in the Suida Manning collection, is now in the Blanton Museum of Art, Texas.1
