Catalogue Note

This view is very close to the group of studies drawn by Rademaker in preparation for his compendium of three hundred topographical prints, Kabinet van Nederlandsche Outheden en Gezichten, which was published by William Barents in 1725.  The design does not, however, relate to any of the published plates. Today, "Ouder-Amstel" is a municipal district covering the villages of Duivendrecht, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and Waver, which lie along the river Amstel, just outside Amsterdam. The precise significance of the term in the early 18th century may have been different, but the location depicted clearly lay in that area.
