Catalogue Note

The royal couple enthroned in this watercolour are the newly-married Queen Doña Isabel II and her Consort, King Don Francisco de Asis (see the previous lot).  The Queen's sister Infanta Doña Maria Luisa and her new husband, Prince Antoine d'Orléans, are to the right.  The couples are seated in the Throne Room of the Royal Palace, Madrid, attended by members of the Court for the ceremony of the Besamanos (or Levée), which traditionally took place following a wedding, and saw the members of the court kissing the hand of the new bride.

The scene must be the companion piece to the previous lot.
