Catalogue Note

Some of Van Goyen's most appealing and attractive drawings are those in which he shows a village market or festival, populated with many lively figures engaged in all manner of activities. In this particularly appealing and well preserved drawing, we see figures crowding round market stalls, loading or unloading waggons, quietly resting, or gathered around a makeshift stage to watch a performance by a company of strolling players. In the left distance, some boys have even climbed a ladder to get a better view.
