Condition

The support consists of three horizontal panels joined together. The two panel joins are secured to the reverse by several small battens. The paint surface is generally secure and under a fairly dirty varnish. Scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye, particularly along the panel joins. This is confirmed under UV light. Offered in a wood and plaster gilt frame with some small damages but generally in fair condition.

The naval Battle of the Downs took place near Dover on 21 October 1639  during the Eighty Years' War and was a decisive defeat of the Spanish, commanded by Admiral Antonio de Oquendo, by the United Provinces, commanded by Lieutenant-Admiral Maarten Harpensz. Tromp.
