Description

  • Jacob van, the elder Oost
  • The Madonna at Prayer
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The canvas appears to be unlined. There's a small hole of approx. 1.5 by 15. cm. upper centre and a a patched restored hole upper right. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish. There is fine craquelure throughout which is beginning to lift in some areas and there are some small scattered losses. The paint is quite thin in the Virgin's blue cloak. There are some minor discoloured retouchings to the background. Inspection under UV light is inconclusive due to the varnish. Offered in black and parcel gilt wood and plaster frame in fair condition.
